Theodore Roosevelt begins his first full term as president of the United States. Ty Cobb makes his debut as a major leaguer. And Albert Einstein publishes his first paper defining his special theory of relativity.

It is also an important year in the history of Ayres family as Ohio native Frank H. Ayres, his wife Daisy and son Donald Ayres journey to Los Angeles to explore land development opportunities. Now a century later, the current members of the Ayres family are commemorating that auspicious beginning, which led from developing subdivisions and building more than 30,000 homes, to the creation of a dynamic chain of 20 European-style boutique hotels beginning in 1985.

Celebrations to commemorate the 100th anniversary are planned for each of the company's hotels in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, and the Inland Empire. The company's corporate and hotel staff numbers more than 600.

"We are proud of our heritage and the accomplishments of the family members who have gone before us," said Donald Ayres Jr., the patriarch and leader of the business that bears the Ayres name.

"We view our 100th anniversary as an opportunity to thank our guests for their patronage, and to inspire our managers and staff to continue their commitment to our three core company values, caring for people, valuing teamwork and delivering results."

His sons, Donald Ayres III, Bruce Ayres and Doug Ayres, as well as daughter Allison Ayres D'Eliscu, have all made major contributions to the success of the hotel chain. The sons are still very active in the business.

Ayres Hotels are known for their convenient locations near major airports, regional shopping centers, world-famous theme parks, and other popular attractions.

Over the years, the Ayres have developed a reputation for providing impeccable guest service, plus creature comforts like living room-style lobbies, with rich upholstered furnishings, inspiring artworks, and imported antiques, and well-appointed guestrooms featuring special touches like exclusive Ayres Dream Sleeper pillow-top mattresses.

"We like to say that our guests' comfort is our only business," said Ayres. "That's why we are pleased to offer appointments that make our properties seem more like luxurious homes than hotels. We want our guests to know they can count on resting well and making the very most of their stay."

Until shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Farnell was a front desk employee for the Ayres Hotel in Anaheim. He joined the Army after the attacks.
"I wanted to do something a bit more patriotic," he said. "It was never anything that I expected to do until that moment."
While in Iraq for 13 months, Farnell wrote to his co-workers at the Ayres Hotel. They Passed around his address and soon his unit was receiving care packages and letters.
He recently returned home on leave for a few weeks and used some of his time before rejoining his Hawaii based unit to thank the Ayres Hotels for what he said were the values that sustained him through tough times in combat. Plus, Farnell said, he wanted to properly thank those people who offered so much support.
On March 23, he presented Don Ayres III with a plaque on behalf of his unit to recognize the company's corporate values, which are: "We care about people. We value teamwork. We deliver results." "Even though it was a lot different working in a hotel and being in combat, I could still use what they taught me at the Ayres Group in the Army," he said.
Farnell, 26, was born and raised in Garden Grove. He has 14 months of active duty left with the Army's 25th Infantry Division.
After he finishes his service, he said he wants to return to Orange County and possibly even the Ayres Hotel. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Ayres Hotel's initial opening in Los Angeles.

Luke Farnell, a former front desk employee at the Ayres Hotel --Anaheim, recently returned from an extended tour of duty in Iraq with a U.S. Army combat unit to personally thank the Ayres Family for instilling the company's values in him that helped sustain him through his harrowing experience in the Middle East.

Luke shared those values - We care about people. We value teamwork. We deliver results - and the correspondence he regularly received from Ayres employees with his fellow soldiers in his unit. Luke joined the military after 9/11.

a team, consider this: Don Ayres Jr. and his three sons-Don, Bruce, and Doug-won the Trans Pacific Yacht Race in 1987, the grueling sailing contest that starts in California and finishes in Hawaii. The four men made up half of the crew aboard Drumbeat, the family's 70-foot yacht, and performed so well as a team that they beat out the dozens of other competitors to win the coveted overall title.
The same principles that helped them win at sea-teamwork, trust, and perseverance - have been helping them to win in business for years.
As owners and operators of the Ayres Hotels, they've built 16 suites, inns, and hotels stretching across Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties, as well as the Inland Empire. Their growth has been constant-one or two hotels a year over the last decade-and the signs bearing the Ayres name are becoming almost ubiquitous in Southern California.
Family involvement, they all agree, has been key to their growth and success. "While my brothers were finding land sites and developing hotels, I was taking care of the operations side," says Don, who, like his siblings and father, eschews titles, preferring to be known simply as the person who oversees the marketing, branding, and pricing strategies.
But Ayres, the man who started it all and the untitled head of the company (he jokingly jostles with son Doug for the title of "head janitor") , says he never planned for it to turn out this way. "I didn't envision having my children work for me," he says.
In fact, until the late 1970s, the elder Ayres was the only Ayres at the company, and the nature of the business was quite different. Back then, he was known as a homebuilder, not a hotelier. He built some 30,000 homes, including such local developments as the Newport Shores community in West Newport and the La Questa homes in Huntington Beach.
Don Ayres Jr. got his start as a young man of 23, when he broke with the tradition set by his father and grandfather, both of whom were land developers in Los Angeles, and built his first two homes in Baldwin Hills.
"It was after the war, and the land development business was slow. Builders were taking over the subdivisions, so I thought I'd better find something else to do," he recalls.
Although he was a neophyte, he caught on fast. "I found that I liked building and creating something," he says, adding that he sold both homes as soon as they were completed.
He progressed to larger projects and shifted his focus to Orange County, a place with which he was already familiar. "I grew up in West Los Angeles, but I used to come here a lot to sail," says the elder Ayres, who today enjoys time aboard his 20-foot Harbor. It's docked just outside his Lido Isle home, which he shares with his second wife, Janet, who assists with quality control at the hotels. He raised his family in Newport Beach, where the siblings all attended Newport Harbor High School.
In 1978, Bruce came on board after graduating from California State University, Long Beach. Over the years, he's worked in nearly every aspect of the business and now is in charge of land acquisition, among other things.
Next came Allyson, who was responsible for the interior design of the model homes, and later the rooms and public spaces at the hotels.
In 1986, they were joined by Bruce's twin, Don Ayres III, who up to that point had spent a good part of his time on the water. "I sailed a two-man dinghy, and competed in national and international races ," says the younger Don, who is married and has two teenage sons.
In 1989, Doug said goodbye to a most unusual past to join the others. A visual anthropology major at University of Southern California (also the alma mater of Don Ayres Jr., the younger Don, and Allyson), Doug spent long stretches of time living with a tribe in the Peruvian Amazon, where he was working on a documentary. He slept in a palm-thatched hut, and hunted snake and rodents with the tribesmen, who nicknamed him The Hairy One because of his voluminous beard.
He later started a sound design business in Los Angeles, but when he and his wife, Michele, had the first of their four children, they decided that an Orange County lifestyle was more suitable for raising a family.
His experiences in the Amazon, he says, have served him well. "I used to have to speak in front of tribal councils; now I speak at city council meetings and to business groups when they come to the hotels," he says. "And my eye as a cameraman has helped me when I'm designing homes and hotels."
About midway through the 1980s, the face of the family business changed. Don Ayres Jr. says he was tired of what he was doing and was looking for something different. "I got sick of building homes," he says. "It was always cyclical."
He remembered a trip to Europe that he'd taken years earlier with Allyson and his youngest child, Victoria, and how impressed he was by the chateaus and bed and breakfasts where they'd stayed. He decided it was a good time to move away from home building and into the hospitality business.
Under the name Country Side Inn, the Ayres Hotels opened its first hotel in Cardiff by the Sea in 1985.
"It was altogether different from what our competitors were doing. The rooms were beautiful and warm with four poster beds, ruffled bed skirts, and a heavy French country look," says Allyson, who left the company in 1999 to raise her three children with husband Bruce D'Eliscu.
The family began constructing hotels that adhered to the aspects of the bed and - breakfast operations that people liked-breakfast rooms, complementary wine and cheese hours, lobbies decorated with antiques, and courtyards filled with flowers - but wrapped it in a package that appealed to the corporate client. Many are close to airports or business parks, and all offer clean, modern rooms at a mid-range price. On weekends, the demographics change from the business traveler to the tourist.
They've gradually phased out the "country" in the names, and they 're now known simply as Ayres Hotels, Ayres Inns, or Ayres Suites, a change that reflects the more elegant European look they've adopted. And with the exception of Doug, who continues to build homes on his own, the Ayres family is now exclusively about hotels. They have 16 of them and employ 650 people. They've even come out with the Ayres Dream Sleeper, an ergonomically designed bed that's sold in their gift shops.
This year, the family is celebrating its centennial, which marks four generations of the Ayres family in business. In each hotel, guests will find an area filled with historic pictures that show the inception of 20th century real estate development in Southern California. They 'll also find a picture of the man who started it all for this family: Frank Ayres.
One day, pictures of another generation of Ayres will hang from the walls.Says Don Ayres III: "There are 13 grandkids, so I would imagine that at least a few are going to go into the family business ."

Ayres traveled from Ohio to Los Angeles on a $2 train ride to buy ranches for his employer.
He finished his work, and never returned. The opportunities were too grand to pass up. He quit his job and started buying land and selling it in pieces.
A century later, his grandson Donald II and great-grandsons Doug, Bruce and Donald III are keeping the family business strong -- now with a collection of 16 European-style boutique hotels headquartered in Costa Mesa.
The family celebrated its 100-year milestone by inviting about 200 clients, employees and friends to a bash Thursday at their flagship Ayres Hotel & Suites Costa Mesa/Newport Beach.
Keeping a family business going through the fourth generation is no easy feat, said Mike Trueblood, director of Cal State Fullerton's Family Business Council.
Statistics show 80 percent of family businesses fail to survive to even the third generation, he said.
Several of the Ayres' 12 grandchildren are already eager to get into the business, family members say.
"I want to work my way up," said Chase Ayres, 17, who has taken summer jobs as a bus boy and bell boy.
While grooming his sons for the business was unofficial and impromptu, getting the grandchildren into the action will need to be much more organized because there are so many, Donald II said.
A 1924 letter from Frank Ayres to his son, Donald Sr., provides a glimpse into how the family business endured.
"If you would come into my office and work as conscientiously and as hard as you would for someone else, you would ultimately do as well as you would for anyone else, but with this added advantage: that you would be building a business for yourself," Frank wrote. "Within 10 years, no doubt, (you will) earn more by such method than by working on a salary for someone else." From World War II through the 1980s, the family built about 30,000 homes, including some in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.
Then Donald II "got tired" of the ups and downs of the housing market and of selling what he built, so he decided to get into the hotel business. On a trip to Europe with his daughter, he noticed a beautifully decorated countryside inn. He modeled the hotel chain after that inn, he said. The first was built in 1985.
His daughter, Allyson Ayres D'Eliscu, did a lot of the chain's decorating, which includes much artwork and imported antiques for a warm, home-style ambiance. His wife, Janet, helps out here and there; his daughter, Victoria Ayres, has opted to stay out of the family business.
At first the hotels were named Country Side Inn, then Country Inn & Suites by Ayres. Recently, most of the properties have been named or renamed without the "country" and with the "Ayres" coming first.
Just three weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the family purchased land to build a hotel in Hawthorne/Manhattan Beach. They were confident tourism and travel would bounce back.
"Our gut said life will go on," Doug Ayres said.
The Newport Beach family owns some commercial property, but hospitality is their true business passion, they said.
The Ayres Hotels of Southern California is "strong" as a business, president James E. Roos said. While he declined to give details about the private company, he confirmed that profits grew by more than 10 percent in 2004.
Trueblood praised the Ayres for hiring Roos.
"That's a difficult pill to swallow for families," Trueblood said. "But they have to realize that as the business grows, they may need someone else's management talents." Despite the president and major support from his three sons, Donald II, 74, still likes to help out with the day-to-day operations. He isn't sure when he will retire.
"I'd get bored," he said.
Doug Ayres credits the many sailing expeditions and races that he, his brothers and his father took when the boys were young with training them to work as a team.
Former and current employees of the family said the Ayres are honest and down-to-earth.
"I wouldn't want to work for anyone else," said Gaylord Muilenburg, who's worked as the family's building renovator for 28 years. "They treat you like family." The Ayres say it's that family atmosphere -- the Ayres often get to know the guests personally -- that makes them different than the large corporate hotel chains.
"They give miles," Doug Ayres said. "We give smiles."

Ayres Hotels staff shines at housekeeping and maintenance appreciation days

COSTA MESA - Knowing that comfort, cleanliness and quality service are essential to any stay at an Ayres Hotels property, the Costa Mesa, California-based chain of 20 European-style boutique hotels has begun a new program called Housekeeping and Maintenance Appreciation Days.
"We want to thank and inspire our housekeeping and maintenance staff to do their very best as they work hand-in-hand to ensure everything in the hotels is in proper working order and up to the Ayres standards of excellence," said Chairman Donald Ayres, Jr. The events were held in conjunction with National Housekeeping Week, observed in hotels across the nation, Sept. 11-17.
"Without their dedication and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that our guests have a relaxing and comfortable stay, we cannot be successful. These events are designed to let them know how important their contribution is."
Emphasizing team spirit and appreciation, the events include bed-making contests - with the hotel owners participating - plus refreshments and prizes. Housekeeping and Maintenance Appreciation Days will become annual events.

But Ayres is quick to credit Nazi Etemadi at Zee Medical of Irvine, Calif., a longtime Ayres' hotel client, who asked Ruth Hartman, senior sales manager for the chain's Costa Mesa property, if the company would be interested in donating any used bedding to the Afghanistan Relief Organization (ARO) she supports.

ARO is a registered nonprofit organization managed by volunteers in the United States and employing Afghan teachers and relief staff in Afghanistan. As a non-governmental organization (NGO), ARO is dedicated to helping the Afghan people by providing relief supplies and educational assistance.

Ayres agreed with Hartman that it was an excellent idea and jumped into action, renting a trailer and personally collecting the bedding for shipment to Afghanistan. Later he joined other volunteers at the relief organization's Orange County facility to load the bedding and other donations into larger containers that are being readied for an airlift to Afghanistan.

"We are grateful to Donald Ayres III and Ayres Hotels for their ongoing generosity and caring by providing much-needed supplies that will be used in family homes, orphan centers and clinics," said Mary Urashima, an ARO volunteer.

"We are pleased to see that Ayres Hotels and Donald III, himself, live up to the hotel chain's slogan, 'We Care About People,"' she said.

"We are delighted to help support this worthy organization that does so much for the people of Afghanistan," said Ayres. "We are honored to be able to donate our surplus supplies to this and similar organizations."

Last year, the well-respected Orange County-based family commemorated 100 years of doing business in Southern California, from developing subdivisions and building more than 30,000 homes, to achieving other business milestones that included creating a dynamic chain of 16 European-style boutique hotels in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, and in the Inland Empire.

Now, in keeping with its pledge to hotel guests to always provide them with comfortable elegance and rich amenities at a competitive price, the company is completing the renovation of guestrooms, lobbies and other public spaces in all of its hotels.

The major renovation project came about as a direct result of the implementation of an aggressive quality assurance program spearheaded by Bruce Ayres and Janet Ayres, wife of family patriarch Donald Ayres, Jr., that underscores the company's attention to quality. Among other things, it includes thorough, surprise inspections of all of the company's hotels from the lobby to the laundry.

"We constantly strive to make our hotels as fresh and unique as the guests we serve by staying ahead of the curve and the competition," said Douglas Ayres. "In undertaking this renovation project, we have taken our new style cues from three primary sources: our European-style boutique hotel tradition, the expectations of our corporate guests and our own unique family influences."

The result is a new decor that moves away from the French Country motif that characterized most of the Ayres properties in the 1990s to an elegant yet more comfortable look more closely resembling the Ayres family's own personal design style - one that makes guests feel like they are staying in a luxurious home rather than in a hotel.

The airy living room-style lobbies now feature burgundy and gold tones on walls and ceilings that are accented with richly upholstered chairs, comfortable sofas, marble-topped wrought iron coffee tables, plus cherry wood sofa and end tables and hardwood cabinetry. Floors are tiled in marble with European inspired rugs, and beautifully framed artwork is everywhere. Many have inviting fireplaces, designed by Douglas Ayres.

Brimming with decorator touches, guestrooms also feature the same fresh color tones, richly upholstered furnishings and compelling artwork found in the hotels' public spaces. Many have custom-made brown leather executive desk chairs paired with oversized work desks featuring high-speed Internet access, and cozy sofas for pure relaxation. In-room kitchenettes feature refrigerators, coffeemakers and microwaves to accent the home feel.

Design statements that are uniquely Ayres include the use of exclusive Ayres Dream Sleeper, pillow-top mattresses, plus upgraded linens and choice of down feather or polyester pillows, and custom duvets. The Ayres Hotel & Suites Costa Mesa-Newport Beach even accents guestrooms and hallways with framed photos of the nautical family's yachting heritage.

To further emphasize the importance of its core business - hotels - the family has also shortened the company name from Ayres Hotel Group to Ayres Hotels.

"Two thousand and six is the first year of an exciting new century for the Ayres Family doing business in Southern California. We have taken this opportune moment in our history as a trendsetting hotel company to change our name to Ayres Hotels to more closely align our formal name with our brand," said Bruce Ayres.

"By changing our name, we are sending a message to our guests that we take our core business - and their comfort, safety and productivity - very seriously."
Donald Ayres III said that what will never change is the attention to detail and service that are hallmarks of every Ayres property, and the company's commitment to its three core values - caring about people, valuing teamwork and delivering results.

That's why the owners of the largest collection of hotels in the region built its first property here in 1984, and why it now offers more than 500 well-appointed, luxurious guestrooms and a formidable 13,000 square feet of meeting space.

Long recognizing the importance of Ontario and Inland Empire as a gateway to all of Southern California, over the years Ayres Hotels had the foresight to add properties as the region blossomed into one of the most dynamic business, residential, shopping, and cultural hubs in the West.

"We are pleased to have been a part of the growth of the region, which is now home to NASCAR racing at the California Speedway, centers of commerce, forest preserves, snow skiing venues, an impressive convention center, an international airport facility, and its entertainment and retail centerpiece, the Ontario Mills Mall," said Donald Ayres III.

Included in the Inland Empire collection are Ayres Suites Corona West; Ayres Inn Corona East; Ayres Suites Ontario Mills Mall; Ayres Inns & Suites Ontario Mills Mall; the Ayres Hotel & Suites Ontario Convention Center and Country Side Suites by Ayres Ontario Airport.

"Quite simply, our breadth of guestrooms and meeting space in this marketplace means that business and leisure travelers, as well as meeting planners, need look no further than Ayres Hotels to find accommodations and event space to their liking," said Ayres.

But not content to rest on its laurels, the owners have recently remodeled the majority of their hotels, including the Corona West and all four Ontario properties. The result is a new decor that moves away from the French Country motif that characterized most of the Ayres properties in the 1990s to an elegant yet more comfortable look more closely resembling the Ayres family's own personal design style - one that makes guests feel like they are staying in a luxurious home rather than in a hotel.

Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the Ayres family doing business in Southern California. The family used the occasion to thank guests for their patronage, and to inspire managers and staff to continue their commitment to three core company values: caring about people, valuing teamwork and delivering results.

"We like to say that our guests' comfort is our business," said Ayres. "Whether they're here for work or pleasure, we want them to know they can count on resting well and making the very most of their stay."

Bolton as the newest Executive Chef of Le Chateau Restaurant, located at the Ayres Hotel & Suites in Costa Mesa, California. Le Chateau Restaurant is locally known as a hidden gem in the highly trafficked Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area, and Chef Mark brings his well bred culinary expertise to the restaurant to make it shine that much brighter.

Chef Mark's training comes from only the best as he was trained by the first American born Master Chef, Marvin Slaughter CEC, in the Culinary Arts Program at the California Regional Occupational Program. Chef Mark began his training at the very tender age of 17 and, after only 3 months, was placed into a formal culinary apprenticeship by Chef Marvin at the Westin Shout Coast Plaza Hotel in Costa Mesa, CA. During the three year apprenticeship, Mark won many awards at various culinary competitions and was voted Apprentice of the Year by the Chef's D'Cuisine Association in Los Angeles, CA. Chef Mark eventually graduated from the culinary apprenticeship in 1984 with a degree as a Certified Journeyman Chef.

After his apprenticeship and subsequent graduation, Mark went on to work for the restaurants Ambrosia, Le Premier, Golden Truffle, and The Magic Island. Then, in 1989, he decided to try his hand in the ever difficult catering industry at The Turnip Rose Elite Catering in Orange, California. The Turnip Rose, voted #1 in the "Best Of" issue of Orange County Magazine three years straight, is considered one of the most prestigious and high end wedding caterers in the Orange County area. Chef Mark's skill in the kitchen quickly led to Chef Mark being named Executive Chef of the Turnip Rose in 1993.

In November of 2010 Chef Mark joined the Ayres family as Executive Chef of Le Chateau and is currently earning rave reviews in well established periodicals, such as The Orange County Register, for his mouth-watering rendition of the Monte Cristo sandwich among other delicious fare. Chef Mark hopes to work with the company to build more hotels, kitchens, and food service operations and plans on a long, fulfilling stay with the rapidly growing hotel chain.
