USS Midway History
The longest serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century, the USS Midway was completed in 1945 and was the first United States warship ever to be unable to maneuver through the Panama Canal due to size. And that was just the in the beginning! The USS Midway saw many modernizations and renovations throughout her early life that eventually left her with an enclosed hurricane bow and a massive, four acres of flight deck. But size was not the USS Midway's only claim to fame. While she played a small role in the Korean War in the 1950's and Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990's, the USS Midway was a key participant in US naval actions during the Vietnam War, specifically in the first and last air-to-air kills in Vietnam and the rescue assistance provided for South Vietnamese Air Force Major Buang-Ly in 1975. Her Vietnam War service garnered the USS Midway a Presidential Unit Citation from President Richard M. Nixon, the third highest naval decoration after the Medal of Honor and Navy Distinguished Service Metal. The USS Midway's service continued to shine throughout the remaining decades of the 20th century and she was eventually moored in Downtown San Diego – but not before becoming a movie star in a documentary!
