Soka University of America History
Established in 1987 in Calabasas, CA, Soka University of America was organized as a graduate school where classrooms would be structured as centers for dialogue and thought as opposed to formal lecture halls. The university mirrored a sister school in Japan, including its backing by Soka Gakkai (a lay Buddhist organization), although the school is nonsectarian. In 1995, the university bought land in Orange County, looking to expand the curriculum to encompass undergraduate studies. The newly-built Soka University of America opened in 2001, and the university's small teacher/student ratio and open minded liberal arts curriculum has helped it thrive among California universities.
