Each year, over a million spectators, come from far and wide to watch the annual Tournament of Roses Parade along Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard. With intricately decorated flower-filled floats, exciting musical performances, and skilled equestrian groups, it is the perfect way to ring in the new year! To help you plan your trip, below are some important suggestions to keep in mind.
Information About the Rose Parade
The Rose Parade takes place on January 1st each year. The parade begins at Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard at 8:00 am and the 5.5-mile route travels from Orange Grove to Colorado Boulevard and finally north on Sierra Madre.
Suggestions for Watching the Parade
First and foremost, dress warmly! Do not assume it will be warm because Southern California is actually quite cold in the morning. It is advised to wear removable layers so that as the day warms up you will not become overheated.
The best place to watch the parade is on the south side of Colorado Boulevard since the sun will not be in your face. Curbside viewing is free and is on a first come, first serve basis. The city of Pasadena allows people to claim sidewalk viewing space along the route starting at noon the day before the race and overnight camping on the sidewalk is permitted.
A more comfortable, albeit expensive, viewing option is to reserve one of the 70,000 elevated Rose Parade grandstand seat tickets.
If you plan on taking pictures, bring a selfie stick so that you can take pictures above the heads of the people standing in from of you.
Of course, if watching the parade in person is not practical, you can avoid fighting your way through the crowd and view it on television.
Other Rose Parade Events
Equestfest is when horses and their riders parade at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Visitors can tour the stables, talk to riders, take pictures, and watch trick riding and roping demonstrations, drills, and dances.
Bandfest takes place two days prior to the Rose Parade and features performances by the all-star bands that will march in the parade.
It is best to book your hotels in advance. For a close, comfortable stay, Ayres Hotel Manhattan Beach is an excellent choice. This boutique hotel is near Manhattan beach and boasts all the luxuries of a contemporary California hotel.
