MIGHTY WURLITZER: BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOUR

Other

Sing-along to the whimsical warbles of the Mighty Wurlitzer, an organ with over two thousand pipes illuminated with glow-in-the-dark paint.

Join Atlas Obscura as we travel back in time, to a day when going to the movies was a big event complete with live music, onstage performances, and oftentimes, audience participation.

Old Town Music Hall began in the 1960s when two musicians, Bill Coffman and Bill Field, purchased the Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ from the Fox West Coast Theatre in Long Beach, CA and installed it in the quaint 188-seat El Segundo State Theater, originally built in 1921. They opened the doors in 1968 and the theater has remained an iconic symbol of heritage and entertainment ever since, with shows nearly every weekend. Silent films are accompanied by the famous Mighty Wurlitzer, just as they were when the films were first shown.

During this tour, we'll go behind-the-scenes to look at the Mighty Wurlitzer's pipe chamber; more than 2,600 pipes, a console with four keyboards, 260 switches, and an array of controls and pedals. We'll discover more about the history of the theater and the organ, enjoy a live sing-along, and a short black & white silent film complete with some Mighty Wurlitzer action.

If you're into Americana and/or film history and culture then trek to the South Bay for this opportunity to experience the real spirit of "going to the theater!" The Old Town Music Hall is a longstanding example of good ol' American family fun!
